The Mindset of an Entrepreneur for Growth [3 Traits to Learn]

Years back, whenever I participated in any group discussion at work, whether formal or otherwise, people always concluded that I was very ambitious. I’d then say – Why not? What’s wrong with that? I am proud that I am so driven. I always had a Mindset of an Entrepreneur.

It was only after greying my hair did I realize the problem in that statement. No, I am not saying that I am no longer Ambitious. On the contrary, the only constant in my life is my Drive to do things. But I have learnt a critical missing piece from this equation. I conclude there is a thin line between Ambition and Drive.

Unfortunately (and I was also guilty as charged), people tie their Ambition to a tangible something (position, goal), while Drive remains an intangible vehicle to meet Ambition. (So far, we used Ambition and Drive to mean the same but no longer).

Now that you have this context & foundation, here are the 4 Mindset Shifts I have discovered through my experiences. If you want to transform your life, you must make these changes.

The DRIVE Mindset

For many years, my Ambition tied me to specific roles in my career (VP, Director, Head). I yearned to have those titles and worked single-mindedly on them. As a result, I conditioned myself to calculate my worth based on my job title (I know you are guilty of it too). You know what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket, right?

The first mindset shift you need is to segregate Ambition and Drive. Stop chasing your Ambition (while acknowledging that you are ambitious, and it is OK), and start working on your Drive. You could argue, ‘but Prits, my Life Ambition fuels my Drive. How can I let that go? Letting one go is saying bye to another as well.’ Let’s understand what Ambition and Drive means .

That’s my point. The reason I asked you to segregate both is to remove dependencies. When you tie your entire being to your job title or a company, you risk losing your identity when something unforeseen happens (unexpected layoffs, for example). On the other side, your Drive allows you to retain your identity and keep moving forward.

Ambition is a destination, and Drive is a journey. Ambition is short-term and tangible. Your Drive is long-term and intangible.
Let go of your Ambition and befriend your Drive.

The BE Mindset

I did not start The BE School because it sounded cool. Nor did I start it to reinvent the wheel and prove how intellectual I am. I did it because I LIVE it! (No kidding). I have learnt this lesson over time and the hard way, and I want you to have easy access to it.

If you are a Marvel fan like me, you know Mjolnir does not make Thor the God of Thunder, and the Iron Suit does not make Tony Stark Iron Man. Neither the Shield nor the uniform makes Captain America the American Hero. These objects complement the superheroes, but with or without them, they ARE their characters. (Remember the closing scene from Iron Man 3? ‘You can take away my house, my tricks and my toys, but one thing you cannot take away from me – I am Iron Man.’)

You need to BECOME your purpose and be so ingrained in it that you know exactly WHY you are here in this world. Once you BE your purpose, your mindset shifts drastically, and you will notice it. You will see internal changes plus how the world treats you. The world will approach you (hands folded), requesting you to help them, be their guest/employee/faculty/mentor/guide.

Lastly, the BE Mindset will help you to live the early days with full passion and enthusiasm. It will help you see through the rough patch, the transition and the transformation phase. Without the BE mindset, you will burn out and choke in sorrow, notably when no one is clapping for you. In short, the BE Mindset is a mindset for Growth.

The Acknowledgment Mindset

To me, there are two forms of acknowledgements. The first is factual, and the other is energy. The first is external, and the latter is internal. Work on both for a mindset shift and to transform your life. Here’s how it works.

When you acknowledge something that has happened around you, two things happen: you come out of deniability (and hence, friction, if that is the case), and secondly, your mind moves to a neutral state and soothes down, which helps you work on solutions (think of all your external situations – job, personal and more).

The second type of acknowledgement is internal. How you acknowledge yourself to your Spirit and the superior being. Both determine how fortified you are to carry out the first two mindset shifts. Also, accepting your Spirit and your designated Superior being helps create better energy around you. Always remember, gratitude is an attitude. Do it for yourself and others generously.

Conclusion

A mindset of an Entrepreneur is a precursor for growth. Unless you harness these personal qualities, your foundation won’t be strong, and you will waiver during the dark days of Entrepreneurship. These traits will also help you have a much-needed positive mindset.
